Research note
What Is a Meta-Harness, Really?
Why enterprises need a control layer above individual coding and agent runtimes.
- agents
- harnesses
- omnigent
- enterprise
An agent harness gives a model tools, an environment, instructions, memory, and boundaries. A meta-harness coordinates several of those harnesses without pretending they are identical.
That distinction matters in an enterprise. One team may use an open-source agent inside a controlled workspace. Another may rely on a closed coding agent with stronger model capability. The useful abstraction is not a universal agent. It is a shared layer for routing, policy, context, evaluation, and observability.
What belongs above the harness
- task routing based on capability and policy
- reusable context and skills
- permission and data boundaries
- common traces, costs, and evaluations
- artifact handoff between specialized agents
The model is replaceable. The operating rules and organizational knowledge are not.
A meta-harness becomes valuable when the organization wants the freedom to combine runtimes without rebuilding governance and evaluation for each one.
